Copyediting is the heavy lifting of the editing process. This is where the editor checks for clarity of writing, language consistency (such as ensuring all numbers and technical terms are consistently used) and ensuring consistency of spelling, capitalisation, font usage, numerals, hyphenation.

Line editing is about the way you communicate your writing to the reader. This looks at language usage, succinctness of sentences, redundancies, and tone, among other things. Where a copyedit focuses on the technical aspects of a manuscript, line editing focuses on ensuring the language suits the purpose.
